Accelerated Reader (AR)
-
Accelerated Reader is a supplemental reading program we use at Acacia to help our students with reading success.
- Students choose books at their appropriate reading levels and read them at their own pace.
- Students then take a quiz. Acacia has a quiz on the computer, for each library book, to help motivate and monitor students’ reading performance and vocabulary growth.
- When students pass three quizzes in the same range, they are moved up to the next level range.
- Students earn prizes at predetermined benchmarks and join the dance party every week with the principal.
Accelerated Reader, in total, has 155 research studies and reviews to support the effectiveness of this program. Of these research studies, 129 were led independently; 29 are experimental or quasi-experimental; and 20 have been published in peer-reviewed journals
There is consensus among key federally funded organizations charged with evaluating educational products that Accelerated Reader is fully supported by scientifically based research. Moreover, these organizations agree that AR is effective in improving students’ reading achievement.
